For the comedy fans amongst us, the thought of Slough is likely to conjure up images of David Brent, the fictional character and undeservingly-smug star of the show The Office, which was set there as part of the joke. However, as easy and amusing as it has been for the British public to get cheap laughs at Slough’s expense, the town – with its plethora of residents, businesses and recruiters, and a £1.5 billion regeneration project underway – is now heartily laughing back.

Recently named the best place to live and work by one of our recruitment industry colleagues, Glassdoor, Slough has much to offer.

It’s a commuter’s dream. Located on the M4, M40 and M25 for easy access across England, it’s also just 10 minutes away by car from Heathrow Airport, 45 minutes from Gatwick and 20 minutes by train from Paddington – with the impending Crossrail arriving in 2019, slashing times to London even further. However, as Slough has the highest concentration of global corporate headquarters outside of London, recruiters don’t necessarily have to look that far and wide in order to find the best talent. For example, The Slough Trading Estate is the largest industrial estate in single private ownership in Europe, more recently housing companies like Virgin Media in some of its 600 buildings. Other companies like Telefonica (O2) have been in Slough for over 20 years, having seen the town’s potential early on and demonstrating a foresight that helps explain why they are a leader in their field!

Slough and its neighbouring areas are a fantastic mix of tradition and modern. From the glamourous, posh playground of Royal Ascot and the pomp and circumstance of Windsor Castle, to the fascination that comes with visiting Bekonscot Model Village or the sheer childish joy to be had at Legoland, there’s something for everyone. And if you’re anything like the headhunters here at Market Recruitment, especially after a long day, you’ll be delighted to know that the Windsor & Eton Brewery and the Thames Valley Wine School are also very close by!
