Market Recruitment was selected to search for Mindlink’s first marketing professional. Since separating from their sister company, they’d seen excellent growth and had subsequently bolstered their sales team by adding in some key people. Ready for this next period of growth, they knew they needed a marketing professional but weren’t sure at what level this person should be at and what type of person would suit the role.
Initially the Mindlink leadership team suggested hiring at a more senior level but after we talked through the role we recommended bringing in an ROI focused mid-level marketer - someone who had enough experience to handle the strategic and autonomous aspects of the role, but someone who hadn’t been too far removed from the ‘doing’. We felt this type of person would suit the role better and not put the budget under undue pressure.
• Stand-alone role; a lot of marketers prefer working with other marketers
• Undefined job description; the leadership team knew what they needed executing but required guidance on the best person to achieve that
• Specific; the client also wanted someone from a SaaS background so they could hit the ground running
Using a contingency model, a key part to the success of this project was always going to be creating something that appealed to this type of marketing professional. Stand-alone marketing roles by their very nature won’t appeal to a lot of marketing candidates – you can be left exposed with little support, in what’s normally a sales/technology led environment. But to the right candidate - taking ownership for the entire marketing effort, working closely with senior leaders and driving change – this type of role can be one of the most rewarding experiences out there.
Our advertising program and networking had to reflect that – and during our interviewing process we made sure we drilled down into key areas to make sure we had someone who’d thrive in that kind of environment.
